CHARITY: INDUSTRY SHOWS IT CARES

RAISING FUNDS FOR HABB DAY

The second annual HABB day showed what a caring, sharing industry the hair and beauty is.

To raise funds and awareness: the Habia team dressed up as cowboys and raised £230 (below);

Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa (left) donated £100 from its dress-down day; and Sweet Squared collected donations.

ACTION STATIONS FOR SUN AWARENESS

Summer sun came courtesy of St Tropez and a troop of 30 models who stripped off to enjoy one of the hottest days of the years at London's St Pancras International railway station.

Bemused commuters looked on as the bathing beauties helped to highlight safe alternatives to sun exposure, as well as support the launch of Sun Awareness Week.

CREDIT CRUNCH HITS

 

JULY Hellen New PR 2.JPGHellen Ward is managing director of Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa and wife of celebrity hairdresser Richard Ward.  The salon is in its 15th year and in 2005 moved to new premises in London's Sloane Square, where Hellen re-branded the beauty area as Metrospa.  The four full-time therapists and two manicurists offer the salons new DCL and Keraskin Esthetics treatments, as well as Aromatherapy Associates, OPI and St Tropez

 

 I'm relieved our new London Mayor is to abolish the £25 congestion charge and consult over the extended Western Extension zone. Since they extended the zone to include our area in February 2007, business has undoubtedly suffered. Many of our clients live out of central London, and not being able to drive into town for a day's shopping and pampering led them to consider deserting us for more local services.

We are just holding our own and beating last year's figures in beauty, but manicuring is down (partly owing to some maternity leave), which further demonstrates the economic downturn. Clients seem unwilling to compromise when it comes to hair and beauty treatments, but the 'little extras' seem to be on a tighter budgetary control.

Summer's here - and inspired by a spell of gorgeous weather I invested in a couple of fashionable, brightly coloured dresses, which I'm going to accompany with painted nails in OPI's I'm in the Mood from their Indian collection and Jessica's hot pink Soak up the Sun.

I'm hot to trot and ready to go - well, after I've run my Leighton Denny Foot File over my feet and blasted my cuticles with Ciaté's Hangover Cure, which is genius because there's no waiting around for it to work. Oh, and I mustn't forget to cover my feet and legs in Drench tanning lotion. I love it because it doesn't smell and can be applied to build colour gradually.

 

MODEL APPEAL

I've been involved with the House of Fraser department store's magazine shoots for a few years now, working on the fashion pages, either with full-length shots of the models, or close-ups of them holding handbags or jewels, or modelling footwear.

JULY yasmin3.jpgThe store has stepped things up this year by using a world-famous model who will appeal to all age groups. She's Yasmin Le Bon - the wife of Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran fame.

And yes, she is that gorgeous in the flesh. I did her manicure for the Samsonite suitcases campaign a couple of years back. She has beautiful 'everything' including natural nails that are blessed with great nail bed length - priceless.

JULY Yasmin-02.jpgYou can tell she looks after herself. Her skin, hair and nails gleam, with what I call regular maintenance - be it de-fluff, facials or manicures. It could be that as she's in such constant demand as a model, she gets regular mini manicures as part of her job.

I used Ciaté's Too Sweet to Eat scrub and then filed her nails into shape, buffed with Star Nails glosser, base-coated with Jessica, and followed with a swift lick of Essie's A lot of Shekels - which was selected by the fashion stylist to 'go with everything'. I agree, it's warm enough for most skin tones - as well as lovely weather.

Look out for the images in the major weekly and monthly magazines.

Hurrah its summer at last!  I've been so busy I feel like I need to be cloned three times over.  That's why I'm looking forward to my holiday at Waikiki Beach, Honolulu.  And talking about far flung places, my brand is now going international...

 

TAKING ON THE WORLD

* Is the world ready for Leighton Denny?  Well it must be as my brand has now launched in New Zealand and is going into 10 spas straight away.

* I am also about to conquer the German market by launching onto the German QVC shopping channel.  It's been so exciting, my team and I have been on a whirlwind visit, training the QVC presenter and more than 100 staff.

* My brand is now building up a strong following in Ireland, where I recently hosted a master class for the Irish media, followed by a black tie dinner.

I painted her nails in her favourite shade Butterfly Wings -- a pretty iridescent pink for an appearance on The Friday Night Project.

Geri also invited me to her book launch at London Zoo.  As it was a delicious book for children featuring a feisty character called Ugenia Lavender, I took my cute little goddaughter Emel and her mum Joleen along with me.

 

DEAR LEIGHTON

Q I'm thoroughly confused about cuticle care.  The way I was taught at college 10 years ago seems to be totally out-of-date.  Can you give me a clear guide to pass on to my staff?

A No problem -- this is the advice on cuticle care that we teach during my own training courses. 

The cuticle is the edge of the skin above the nail matric; it protects the soft new nail as it emerges.  The cuticle skin is very thin and at the extreme of the body.  Less moisture is delivered to it and it is prone to dryness, so condition frequently at home and in the salon with specialist cuticle oil.

I would not advise cutting the cuticles as cuticle scissors, nippers or knives can cause damage, even in skilled hands.  Cutting cuticles will only encourage thicker and tougher growth, while damage to the cuticles can allow bacteria to enter the body causing infection.  Only use the cuticlesnippers to clip off loose (snags) cuticle or hangnails to prevent the client pulling these off themselves....Ouch!

 

To look attractive, the cuticle needs to be freed from the nail surface and shaped to an even contour.  An exfoliating cream with AHAs will shed the skin gently and naturally, while moisturising at the same time.  Cuticle products with traditional formulations containing alkaline ingredients (such as potassium hydroxide) should be avoided as they can damage the skin.

How to achieve a long-lasting polish

Achieving a long-lasting, even polish is easy if you follow the golden rules for painting.  Painting nails is really just like decorating -- if the surface is not prepared properly, no matter how well you paint on your polish, it will not last.

* Remove old polish thoroughly with a non-acetone remover.

* File and shape the nail with a crystal nail file to seal and smooth the free edge of the nail, which prevents polish chips on the extreme edge of the nail.

* Polish will not adhere to cuticle, so use an AHA cuticle remover to clear the nail plate.

* Buff and treat dry ridged, flaky nails to ensure even paint coverage.

* De-grease the nail plate with polish remover.  Make sure it has completely evaporated before proceeding.

* Prime the nail with a matte treatment basecoat designed to grip on to the nail and chosen colour.

* Apply two thin coats of polish.  Look after your polish.  It should be in tip-top condition and exactly the right consistency -- too thick and your polish will not dry; too thin and it will stripe.

* Coat the nails with a proprietary topcoat, preferably with UVA filters to keep the colour fresh.

* Fix with a silicone-based fast-drying product.

Growing year on year, and now firmly established as an annual event, Pevonia hosted its third awards ceremony at the five-star Grange City Hotel in London to acknowledge the achievements and of its account holders.

JULY Artspa - Best Newcomer of the Year 2007.jpgThe evening started with a Champagne reception for guests to meet and mingle, before they were called to the Pevonia-branded auditorium suite where they enjoyed a three-course gala dinner. This was complemented by entertainment from a live Rat Pack tribute trio.

During coffee, Pevonia's director of skincare, Daniela Chandler, took to the stage and welcomed the valued shortlisted accounts. "All finalists are winners in their own right, so will be awarded an emblem signifying finalist status for marketing purposes," she said. A short video montage followed, highlighting the company's achievements, progress and growth over the past 12 months.

"No business is a success without the team within it to help drive it forward," said Daniela, before announcing dispatch supervisor Gavin Murrel as the winner. "This person received the highest number of votes by the entire Pevonia team and truly deserves this award," she added

As well as a disco, there was a fun gaming casino where guests could try Blackjack or roulette.

"The evening was yet again a huge success for Pevonia UK," said Daniela. "The feedback had been incredible and we are thrilled to have hosted another unforgettable and successful event."

Pevonia MD Paul Mason thanked Daniela, along with colleagues Victoria Golding and Jane Gammage, for putting the evening together. "I am proud to be associated with not just the product, but everyone associated with the organisation," he said.

BRIEF ENCOUNTER: SHARON MOORE

JULY Sharon Moore.jpgSHARON MOORE is the company director of Face etc... medispa, which merges traditional and advanced beauty in one establishment.  Four years after opening, the beauty clinic has gone from strength-to-strength, recently relocating and expanding to a 14-room, three-storey premises in York city centre, with a VIP suite and extensive treatment menu.

 

What is your greatest business achievement?

Only three years after opening the spa, client demand had increased so significantly I began turning business away. So, after months of hard work renovating the old Yorkshire television building into a sumptuous spa, we relocated and expanded to our new beauty clinic in the centre of the city.

What has been the most satisfying/rewarding moment in your career?

The blood, sweat and tears of relocating were all worth it when hundreds of people flocked to celebrate the spa's official launch. I felt an overwhelming wave of pride seeing what was once just a concept come to life when the reigning Miss England declared the premises officially open.

What is the best business/career advice you have ever been given?

Leap and the net will appear.

Three things you couldn't do your job without?

My husband and children - all of whom have supported me unreservedly from day one; my team, especially my manager Lisa; and also a witty, black sense of humour!

Best/worst bits of your job?

My team are not only extremely hard working and passionate about what they do, we all get on really well, which makes the spa a lovely environment to work in. The worst part has got to be turning away hopefuls who apply for jobs - I wish I were able to offer more positions.

Future business ambitions?

I am very passionate about offering my clients the latest beauty developments, so I am constantly looking for revolutionary treatments to add to the menu. I hope to continue
introducing exciting new services to the spa and remain at the forefront of beauty.

Imagine you are at the start of your career, what would you change?

While my nursing background has taught me great skills that I use every day, I wish I had followed my beauty dream a little sooner.

Would you do it all again?

In a heartbeat!

How did you get into the beauty industry?

I used to work in magazines - my last job was associate editor of Glamour magazine - and I was always surrounded by gorgeous beauty products. It was after that I decided to create an organic range that was as glamorous as it was organic, so I didn't have to choose between the two anymore.

What is your greatest business achievement?

All of the launches (the candles, then the home treatment mists and finally the bodycare range) are great achievements when they finally happen because so much work goes into making every aspect of them perfect.

What has been the most rewarding moment in your career?

We were thrilled to be awarded Cosmopolitan magazine's Candle of the Year last year, and my business partner Oliver Mennell and I were also recognised by Gordon Brown when we were commended at the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.

What is the best career advice you have ever been given?

My dad is a great inspiration to me; he was the one who told me to go for it back in 2005. He is always pushing Oliver and me to be brave. He once said to us: "Jump and you shall find a net - you've got to be ballsy, it's the only way to grow." Scary, but so true.

Three things you couldn't do your job without?

Oliver, the rest of the amazing NEOM team, and a nice husband waiting for me at home come 7pm.

Best/worst bits of your job?

The best - having a house full of beautiful candles and body products all the time and working with an enthusiastic team that really believes anything is possible. The worst is checking proofs. I am really impatient and often skip little typos that I get into lots of trouble for!

Future business ambitions?

I want to make NEOM the hottest, fastest-growing luxury organic brand, and launch many more amazing products.

Imagine you are at the start of your career - what would you change?

Bits and bobs, but I honestly believe even the bad bits help shape your path, without them you wouldn't learn so much. Maybe I'd have taken a year off at the start of my career to go travelling - I was always in a huge rush to get started young.

Would you do it all again?

If I knew it was going to be this hard, I don't know if I would have had the guts to do it in the first place - but with hindsight, of course I would!

The founder of the Institute of Clinical Aromatherapy, and pioneer of modern aromatherapy worldwide, Eve shared her vast knowledge and demonstrated a method of blending oils, explaining how it smelled on different skins.

She said: "I am delighted to be in Lewes, especially on my birthday.

"The students at Sussex Downs College are energetic and knowledgeable, and they have a great career ahead of them.  I enjoyed meeting them and answering their questions."

BABTAC'S (British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology) country-wide roadshows (BEST - Beauty, Education, Seminars and Training), begain in Leeds.  Sasha Lill sits in on HR consultant and employment law expert, David Wright's lecture.

 

LEARN HOW TO MANAGE YOUR STAFF EFFECTIVELY

Salon owners spend thousands on premises and products but miss the chance to maximise the benefit of their human resource - their staff, who determine how good the salon is.

As an HR consultant and employment law expert, David Wright knows that employing staff can be a nightmare and employment law, complex. With 100,000+ tribunals held each year, he stressed the need to know what the employment risks are before you start.

In his seminar, Ten Tips To Effectively Manage Your Staff, David advised on how to use such things as your contract of employment ("the most valuable document you have") and the law to your advantage.

Subjects covered included: how to appoint the right staff; using a long probationary period with tough targets to make sure you keep only the best staff; and minimising the disruption of holiday entitlement by ensuring leave isn't taken at your busiest period.

Recognising that staff need motivation, David touched on training and how to recover costs from staff who leave within a short period of time, plus how your conditions of service can reward good performers and loyalty, as well as help minimise costs. He discussed the benefits of flexible hours and part-time working as a positive not a negative, giving practical examples of how this works for a salon. Holiday entitlement, notice periods and maternity rights also featured, as well as disciplinary issues and procedures.

Whatever employment issue you face, get advice before you start - ignorance is bliss but no defence, warned David.

AWARDS: THE COUNTDOWN...

The hard work is officially over. The entries are in, each one has been carefully checked against the criteria and then put through the rigorous judging processes to ensure only the best are rewarded with such well-respected accolades.

After being put under scrutiny by category sponsors, industry experts, an army of mystery clients, and finally, the all-important practical trade tests, all that's left to do is add up the scores for each entry, before we can reveal this year's finalists for the British Beauty and Spa Awards.

Entrants will have to remain on tenterhooks for a little while longer before we publish the shortlist in next month's issue.

A select few, co-ordinating the awards process, have taken a vow of secrecy and will remain tight-lipped keeping any hint or suggestion of the winners strictly under wraps, that is until the celebrity host (also a closely guarded secret until the night) welcomes the sponsor to the stage, the envelope is opened, and the winner announced.

"We are delighted with the amount of entries we received for this year's awards," said Jayne Lewis-Orr, publisher and editor-in-chief of Health and Beauty Salon.

Yep, that's what I thought when leafing through the Metro half asleep this morning.

The paper detailed the story that Superdrug is selling a male eyeliner -- known as Guy Liner -- under the Taxi Man label.

Previously a long-standing accessory for punks, goths and now emos -- it is the first time the store has sold colour cosmetics for men.

Futher investigation shows that The Mirror also runs the story about the range -- which also includes Manscara -- which goes on sale in stores next week.

It reads: "The Taxi Man range includes Manscara, mascara for men, and Guy-Liner, for men which chunkier fingers, to use.

Superdrug which launches the range on 6 August, said sales of male grooming items had doubled since 2005.

Superdrug's Jeff Wemyss said: "Men are more obsessed with their appearance than ever,"

Celebrities Russel Brand, Alex Zane and Robbie Williams all admit using eyeliner.

Taxi Man creator Peter Kelly said: "It all about subtle makeup rather than wanting to create the drag queen look".

World Skills UK - Beauty Therapy Competition

Beauty therapy student, Wendy Campbell (37) of Abingdon and Witney College in Oxfordshire, won second place in the live final of the World Skills UK beauty therapy competition. One of eight finalists from across the country, she was awarded a certificate and prize of a Silhouette voucher worth £75.
