UV LIGHT AND THE RISK OF CANCER

Posted by Sasha Lill
Dated: September 23, 2009 12:00 AM

In response to the recent stories coming out of the United States regarding the use of UV light for nail cosmetics and the risk of cancer, Wilde Cosmetics (manufacturer of LCN products) states:

UV LIGHT FOR NAIL COSMETICS AND THE RISK OF CANCER

by Prof Dr. rer.Nat.habil.Ralf Janda, director of research and development of the Wilde Group (manufacturer of LCN products)

Light curing units to cure nail resins cause cancer - really?

Title stories of previously published newspapers discussed the risk of UVA-light emitted from light-curing units to cure nails resins. Although some papers cited doctors from the sunny state Texas in the US who have seen skin cancer on the hand of one lady, the readers shall keep in mind that the outer surface of the hand is always completely unprotected against strong sunlight - who is biking with gloves?

Based on these yellow press publications there are many concerns in public about nail cosmetics using light-curing nail resins. However, based on scientific knowledge, all these concerns are absolutely not justified. Reports about the worldwide economic crisis have been stressed for many months and therefore, have now become boring. Other shocking news is needed to keep up papers' sales.

What is the situation?

UVA-light curing devices to cure nail resins have been used in the nail industry for approximately 25 years and millions of women are treated every year with these devices. No articles in medical literature were found reporting about a single case of tumours on women's hands caused by UVA nail resin curing devices.

As it is known to everybody UV-light is always present in our life, the risks of over-exposure are widely discussed and a broad scientific knowledge is available. The effects of UV-light on humans have been well investigated and standard values are defined especially with regard to tanning beds.

UV-light is differentiated in UVA- (wavelength 320-400nm) and UVB-light (wavelength 290-320 nm). It is proven that over-exposure of UV-light can cause different types of skin cancer (melanoma). Whereas UVB-light causes severe sunburn, UVA-light is responsible for pigmenting the skin and therefore, UVA-lamps are used for tanning beds. Since no sunburn is caused by UVA-light, it was considered to be rather safe for a long period of time. However, science learned that UVA-light penetrates skin to much deeper regions and therefore, it represents a high risk for the development of tumours and it is proven that fast skin ageing occurs.

However, UV-light (UVA and UVB) is not only risky but also healthy - the dose is decisive. It is necessary to synthesise vitamin D in our bodies which is important for a sound bone structure. It also positively influences the immune system, the metabolism, blood pressure and other physical and psychical factors. UV-light is also widely used for many medical therapies.

What are the hard facts?

For the nail curing devices only the UVA amount is of interest. The irradiance of an LCN curing device is approximately 70 W/m2 in comparison with a tanning bed performing approximately 300 W/m2.

Literature reports that UVA-radiation doses of around 100.000 Ws/m2 is needed to achieve an even noticeable tanning of the skin. This means you would have to be in a tanning bed performing 300 W/m2 for at least 6 minutes (representing a radiation dose of 108.000 Ws/m2) to see just a little pigmenting. Normally people spend around 20 minutes in a tanning bed to get a nice cosmetic appearance what represents a radiation dose of 360.000 Ws/m2.

Within 2 minutes curing the LCN curing device performs a radiation dose of 8.400 Ws/m2 which is approximately 40 less than 20 minutes tanning bed. It has also to be regarded that the whole body surface (2 m2) is irradiated in a tanning bed in comparison with the irradiation of hand surface 0,015 m2 in a curing device.

Furthermore, literature also reports that European regulatory authorities, including those in the UK and Sweden, have given exposure standards for UVA. For the spectral region of 315-400nm (UVA), the total irradiance incident on unprotected eyes and skin for periods of greater than 1.000 seconds (approximately 16 minutes) should not exceed 10 W/m2, and for exposure times of 1.000 seconds or less the total radiant exposure of unprotected eyes and skin should not exceed 10.000 J/m2.

Comparing the radiation of the LCN curing device with these given standards the situation is as follows:

The irradiance incident is 2 minutes (one curing cycle) and therefore, the exposure is far below the standard. Expressed in J/m2 the LCN device performs 8.400 J/m2 which again is below the standard. Please keep in mind that the standard is also valid for unprotected eyes meaning that the 2 minutes curing cycle does not even damage the eyes. However, LCN instructions for use claim adequate eye protection to make the process absolutely safe.

Conclusions

Hands are normally totally unprotected against sunlight or the lights of tanning beds. Especially during biking or sunbathing the outer surfaces of hands are extremely exposed to UV-radiation. These facts elucidate why skin cancer is observed on hands.

No reports are available proving that tumours are caused by nail curing devices. Compared with tanning beds the LCN curing devices are 40 times safer. Consulting existent standards for UVA irradiance of unprotected eyes and skin the LCN devices can be considered as totally safe when properly used. Moreover, light-curing nail cosmetics have a crucial positive impact on our health when compared with archaic powder/liquid technique. Therefore, it is unjustifiable to strike terror to people.

However, there is an easy way to eliminate peoples' fear completely - use disposable gloves and cut off the fingertips. This is also more hygienic.

However, it is always a concern of research and development to make safe things safer and to improve quality of life. Since 2007 LCN offers the LED curing device skyLED which emits almost no UV-light and in the middle of 2009 LCN will introduce skyLED-2 performing an emission completely above 400nm.

All clients of well-trained nail professionals can be sure and confident that the light-curing technique is the most safe and health oriented nail cosmetic known in our days.

The idea is that natural copper heals, and this pillowcase harnessed with that power, will prevent wrinkles and improve your skin's overall appearance while you sleep.  Talk about a beauty nap!

OCT REBALANCE.jpgWE OFFER OUR CLIENTS THE DEVOTED CARE THEY'D EXPECT

Heading up a team of three therapists, Cardiff-based ReBalance spa manager Jo Pucknell has been nurturing the business since its soft launch in May this year. The treatment list features a cache of signature treatments from Ren and Spa Find indulgences, as well as hydrotherapy treatments

By establishing ourselves from the outset as a real sanctuary and a 'friend' to the people of Cardiff, we have been able to care for the business in a way that will hopefully ensure longitudinal fruition.

We have strongly affiliated ReBalance with the same principles we were founded upon - integrity, heart, and tenacity - and therefore hope we can offer our clients the devoted care they expect - and then some more!

We wanted to offer innovative, directional treatments that were 'firsts' for Wales, but by combining these with a gentler approach and using prestigious brand treatments and our own niche treats, we strive for a unique offering.

With a soft launch, we have been able to hone and refine our roots and blossom outwards - even eschewing pure advertising or gimmicky offers as we felt it was more important to let Cardiff get to know us through what we do and via editorial coverage.

Marketing and promotions have been kept fairly discreet to allow a local awareness to develop first and foremost, although we did produce some strikingly designed pamphlets that really captured people's attention. They are also being taken up by local businesses as a way of keeping everyone in the loop, which is fantastic for mutual development.

Although the interior design - along with some of the seemingly revolutionary treatments at ReBalance - are unique and distinctive to the area, some of our clients were perhaps a little taken aback. In particular, the hydro-dermabrasion facial we recently launched elicited some surprise. But we have been able to persuade clients to try it by encouraging them to see it as part of a 'total concept' for the spa.

We want them to know we are not only skilled in the conventional treatment areas, but offer that 'something special' that ultimately distinguishes us.
With this philosophy, a near artisanal approach to treatments and therapies, we have 'balanced' our spa metaphorically.

Fundamentally, it is about special treatments, for special people - and our clients will always be special to us. We promise.

BRIEF ENCOUNTER: SHARON MOORE

Posted by Annette Hanford
Dated: July 23, 2008 12:00 AM

JULY Sharon Moore.jpgSHARON MOORE is the company director of Face etc... medispa, which merges traditional and advanced beauty in one establishment.  Four years after opening, the beauty clinic has gone from strength-to-strength, recently relocating and expanding to a 14-room, three-storey premises in York city centre, with a VIP suite and extensive treatment menu.

What is your greatest business achievement?

Only three years after opening the spa, client demand had increased so significantly I began turning business away. So, after months of hard work renovating the old Yorkshire television building into a sumptuous spa, we relocated and expanded to our new beauty clinic in the centre of the city.

What has been the most satisfying/rewarding moment in your career?

The blood, sweat and tears of relocating were all worth it when hundreds of people flocked to celebrate the spa's official launch. I felt an overwhelming wave of pride seeing what was once just a concept come to life when the reigning Miss England declared the premises officially open.

What is the best business/career advice you have ever been given?

Leap and the net will appear.

Three things you couldn't do your job without?

My husband and children - all of whom have supported me unreservedly from day one; my team, especially my manager Lisa; and also a witty, black sense of humour!

Best/worst bits of your job?

My team are not only extremely hard working and passionate about what they do, we all get on really well, which makes the spa a lovely environment to work in. The worst part has got to be turning away hopefuls who apply for jobs - I wish I were able to offer more positions.

Future business ambitions?

I am very passionate about offering my clients the latest beauty developments, so I am constantly looking for revolutionary treatments to add to the menu. I hope to continue
introducing exciting new services to the spa and remain at the forefront of beauty.

Imagine you are at the start of your career, what would you change?

While my nursing background has taught me great skills that I use every day, I wish I had followed my beauty dream a little sooner.

Would you do it all again?

In a heartbeat!

BRIEF ENCOUNTER: NICOLA ELLIOTT

Posted by Sasha Lill
Dated: July 20, 2008 12:00 AM

Nicola Elliott.jpg

Nicola Elliott is the managing director of NEOM Luxury Organics by Natural Magic. After the success of the Luxury Organic Treatment Candles, which launched in May 2005, Nicola launched the organic capsule bodycare range earlier this year

How did you get into the beauty industry?

I used to work in magazines - my last job was associate editor of Glamour magazine - and I was always surrounded by gorgeous beauty products. It was after that I decided to create an organic range that was as glamorous as it was organic, so I didn't have to choose between the two anymore.

What is your greatest business achievement?

All of the launches (the candles, then the home treatment mists and finally the bodycare range) are great achievements when they finally happen because so much work goes into making every aspect of them perfect.

What has been the most rewarding moment in your career?

We were thrilled to be awarded Cosmopolitan magazine's Candle of the Year last year, and my business partner Oliver Mennell and I were also recognised by Gordon Brown when we were commended at the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.

What is the best career advice you have ever been given?

My dad is a great inspiration to me; he was the one who told me to go for it back in 2005. He is always pushing Oliver and me to be brave. He once said to us: "Jump and you shall find a net - you've got to be ballsy, it's the only way to grow." Scary, but so true.

Three things you couldn't do your job without?

Oliver, the rest of the amazing NEOM team, and a nice husband waiting for me at home come 7pm.

Best/worst bits of your job?

The best - having a house full of beautiful candles and body products all the time and working with an enthusiastic team that really believes anything is possible. The worst is checking proofs. I am really impatient and often skip little typos that I get into lots of trouble for!

Future business ambitions?

I want to make NEOM the hottest, fastest-growing luxury organic brand, and launch many more amazing products.

Imagine you are at the start of your career - what would you change?

Bits and bobs, but I honestly believe even the bad bits help shape your path, without them you wouldn't learn so much. Maybe I'd have taken a year off at the start of my career to go travelling - I was always in a huge rush to get started young.

Would you do it all again?

If I knew it was going to be this hard, I don't know if I would have had the guts to do it in the first place - but with hindsight, of course I would!

HOLDING OUR OWN AS THE

JULY Hellen New PR 2.JPGHellen Ward is managing director of Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa and wife of celebrity hairdresser Richard Ward.  The salon is in its 15th year and in 2005 moved to new premises in London's Sloane Square, where Hellen re-branded the beauty area as Metrospa.  The four full-time therapists and two manicurists offer the salons new DCL and Keraskin Esthetics treatments, as well as Aromatherapy Associates, OPI and St Tropez

I'm relieved our new London Mayor is to abolish the £25 congestion charge and consult over the extended Western Extension zone. Since they extended the zone to include our area in February 2007, business has undoubtedly suffered. Many of our clients live out of central London, and not being able to drive into town for a day's shopping and pampering led them to consider deserting us for more local services.

We are just holding our own and beating last year's figures in beauty, but manicuring is down (partly owing to some maternity leave), which further demonstrates the economic downturn. Clients seem unwilling to compromise when it comes to hair and beauty treatments, but the 'little extras' seem to be on a tighter budgetary control.

BRIEF ENCOUNTER: MARY OVERTON

Posted by Annette Hanford
Dated: June 6, 2008 11:27 AM

MAY Mary Overton.jpg

Meet MARY OVERTON -- the export manager for CACI International, the largest UK manufacturer and provider of specialist electrotherapy equipment, supplying more than 6,000 of the world's leading salons and day spas.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?

I started my career 26 years ago on the recommendation of a relative who was working as beauty editor for a leading women's magazine. I was looking for inspiration and she suggested a career in beauty would offer me many varied and exciting opportunities, as well as being a growing industry. This has certainly proved to be the case!

In 1981, after graduating from the Shaw College of Beauty Therapy, I worked as a beauty therapist/aromatherapist for several years, before gaining further qualification in teaching and media studies and working for several multi-national com-panies. For the past eight years I have been involved in developing the export market for CACI International and raising the profile of the brand overseas.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST BUSINESS ACHIEVEMENT?

Increasing the global market presence for CACI International from four to 30 distributors and engaging new business in more than 50 countries.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST SATISFYING/REWARDING MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER?

In the early days of my career as a UK-based trainer for another company, I was given two days' notice to present a sales and training seminar in Malta for 50 therapists. With a copy of the book Feel the Fear And Do It Anyway packed into my suitcase, this marked my transition into the international arena.

WHAT IS THE BEST BUSINESS/CAREER ADVICE YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN?

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

THREE THINGS YOU COULDN'T DO YOUR JOB WITHOUT?

My passport; my Blackberry; and the support of my partner.

BEST/WORST BITS OF YOUR JOB?

Best bits are combining my passion for travel, cultural experiences and beauty with a truly international company producing cutting-edge technology; seeing two of our top CACI spas being presented with awards at the glittering black-tie AsiaSpa Awards ceremony in Hong Kong this year; learning more about life from a different perspective in the Middle East and South East Asia; and being involved in the global growth of the wellness and spa industry.
Downsides are that inter-national travel is not always glamorous, with the effects of a long-haul flight, time differences, and the necessary but nevertheless increased security at airports, which can, on occasion, make travelling quite exhausting. Also graciously eating chicken's feet, jellyfish and snake, ceremoniously presented to me by one of my Chinese clients!

FUTURE BUSINESS AMBITIONS

To continue developing the global presence of the CACI brand.

IMAGINE YOU ARE AT THE START OF YOUR CAREER, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE?

I have enjoyed the varied path my career has taken, and without learning-curves I would not be where I am today. Maybe the only change I would have made is to have studied languages at an
earlier age.

WOULD YOU DO IT AL AGAIN?

Without hesitation.

JOURNAL: KAMINI VAGHELA, KAMINI

Posted by Annette Hanford
Dated: June 4, 2008 11:13 AM

MAY kami.JPGCONCENTRATING ON CONSOLIDATING

KAMINI VAGHELA has owned Kamini, a six-treatment room, holistic, upmarket salon in London's Kensington, since 2005.  Born in Zimbabwe, she came to the UK in 1979, trained in beauty therapy at Kingston College of Further Education in Surrey, then worked in salons around London.  Her speciality is threading eyebrows and she is famed for delivering the perfect shape.  Her clients include celebrities and the beauty directors of glossy magazines.

The salon's location is central, and I'm gradually building up my clientele, mainly through word-of-mouth recommendation - the best way - and editorials in newspapers and glossy magazines. I advertise in the local media when I've introduced a new therapy to the menu.

The salon offers Sothys treatments and products, while nail products are from Essie - they are excellent and popular with clients. For hair removal, I use Cetuem wax and Ellipse IPL, and Endermologie to treat cellulite - all three are in demand.

There are three therapists, including myself, and a receptionist. I shall take on more staff as I expand.

I passionately believe in treating the whole person and in holistic therapies, so visiting experts come in two or three times a week to carry out complementary therapies, such as acupuncture, reiki and remedial and sports massage, as well as diet and nutrition.

There is a growing demand for threading from clients. I offer it as a package with eyebrow and eyelash tinting, but will do just threading if preferred. I am passionate about the shape of eyebrows - they frame the face, and, properly done, make all the difference to how a person looks. This is why it is so

important the right technique is used.
My threading technique is quite different to others, so my long-term mission is to set up a formal, intensive training programme to teach my way of threading. But that's for the future - the present aim is to consolidate my business.

BRIEF ENCOUNTER: TRACY PARKIN

Posted by Annette Hanford
Dated: May 29, 2008 8:23 AM

APRIL Tracy Parkin.jpgTracy Parkin is sales and marketing director for Bare Escentuals, looking after the growth and development of MD Formulations skincare and Bare Minerals make-up. She is based at the head office in Basildon, Essex, but travels worldwide.  Sasha Lill reports

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?

I trained as a beauty therapist at Ware College in Hertfordshire. It was a two-year International Health and Beauty Council (IHBC) course, which I started at the age of 18 - back in the big hair days! Following this, I qualified as a beauty therapist, and started work at a salon in the Barbican in London. I then moved to Colchester, for a job with Plimsolls Health & Beauty Club, which was among the first clubs to really push the 360° approach to beauty, nutrition, fitness and health.

GREATEST BUSINESS ACHIEVEMENT?

When I started work on MD Formulations, it wasn't a well-understood brand. Some people in the industry were scared to use it because they didn't understand the benefits and correct usage of a product that contains such effective levels of glycolic. Bringing it to the attention of therapists and consumers has been satisfying.

MOST SATISFYING/REWARDING MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER?

Introducing Bare Minerals to the salon market in the UK five years ago.  We were the first to combine Bare Minerals (100% pure mineral make-up) with MD Formulations (technologically advanced skincare) within our treatment protocols, to ensure a complete skincare regime was available.

The introduction of 100% pure Bare Minerals was so successful it was offered in 50 key salon sites in the first year, with great success. This is when Bare Escentuals really started to lead 'the mineral revolution' in the UK.

WHAT IS THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED?

'Tomorrow is another day'. Each new day is a fresh page to come up with and drive ideas. I use it with my own team now.

THREE THINGS YOU COULDN'T DO YOUR JOB WITHOUT

My sense of humour; my passion and love for the industry, even though it spans more than 23 years; and my dedicated team.

BEST AND WORST PARTS OF YOUR JOB?

It's much easier to think of the best bits. The best part of my work is taking an idea and concept and seeing it evolve and succeed. Negative bits? Well, there's always too much admin - admin is a necessary evil.

FUTURE BUSINESS AMBITIONS?

To maintain the success of both Bare Minerals and MD Formulations; to continue to get more people to understand the benefits and clear messages of both fantastic product lines; and to continue to strike up more key business partnerships.

IMAGINE YOU ARE AT THE START OF YOUR CAREER -- WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE?

I wouldn't. I started at ground-roots level in the salon. I've waxed, I've plucked, and I've worked the anti-social hours. I have built my career up step-by-step, and I think it is important I understand what it is like to work in this industry at every level. I have learnt some great lessons from some great people along the way.

WOULD YOU DO IT ALL AGAIN?

Yes - it has made me who I am today.

WAXING: GORILLA WARFARE

Posted by Annette Hanford
Dated: May 21, 2008 8:50 AM

First-class service, a men-only environment and a touch of sensitivity means Axiom Bodyworks is making headway in the field of male grooming. Annette Hanford reports

From bushy brows to hairy toes - and everything in between - waxing is the most popular treatment at Axiom Bodyworks, Andy Rouillard's male-only salon in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

APRIL ANDY.JPG"We wax just about every nook and cranny you can think of and quite possibly a few you can't," he laughs. "Male waxing isn't just another add-on treatment for us, it's our bread and butter, and we've built our reputation on providing a first-class service that keeps people coming back from literally miles around," he adds.

Initially starting out in massage therapy, Andy trained as a beauty therapist, but encountered problems with colleges accepting him as a male beauty therapist.

WAXING: A PAIN IN THE....?

I read the following story in Monday's Daily Mail (14 April) and was shocked how -- what I consider to be such a simple procedure could go so wrong.

It may be that the therapist wasn't properly trained, or that poor Lisa B has a very low pain threshold, but come on... when has waxing ever nearly included a trip to the hospital?

WAXING LYRICAL

Waxing as we all know is probably the most popular salon treatment.

Well, when I say popular, I don't mean the most luxurious, or the one most people would pick from a treatment list out of choice, but in the sense that is the most carried out treatment in salons up and down the country.

PREGNANCY TREATMENTS

MUM'S THE WORD

Whether the children are in their cots or going to college, it’s never too late for mothers to tighten their tums and pamper their skin. Annette Hanford reports

FEB%20PREG%20INTRO.jpg
LOVE THAT TUM

The founders of Mama Mio understand the stresses and strains pregnancy puts on the body, but just as importantly, they also understand how mothers can feel about their bodies after bearing children.

“Whether your client’s baby is new or already in college, there comes a time in every mama’s life when she looks in the mirror and thinks, ‘the time has come to get my body back’,” says Tanya Mackay.

Fellow-founder Sian Sutherland adds: “There are so many wonderful aspects to being a mother, but some of the physical side-effects are not so gorgeous. With seven kids between us, we know what that feels like. While we know we will never be 18 again, we still want to be gorgeous.”

They agree: “Our theory is simple: work at what you can change for your client and relax about what you can’t. You can change the appearance of her skin – so, take control: it’s time to help your client get her body back.”

PROMOTION: MOTHER'S DAY

Posted by Annette Hanford
Dated: April 7, 2008 12:00 AM

Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity for salons to push their services as a pampering gift. Annette Hanford reports

Mother’s Day is the time when sons and daughters are looking for ways to show their mums just how much they are appreciated and loved, says Dean Nathanson, MD at Caci International.

What better way, he asks, is there to show a mum how much she is thought of than to make her feel extra-special by treating her to an ultimate beauty salon makeover.

FEB%20NATURAL%20MAGIC.jpg
PERFECT FOR YUMMY MUMMIES

“A salon treatment is the perfect gift for an active mum, as this provides a unique opportunity for her to relax and unwind and enjoy a rare bit of self-indulgence. And who knows, she might enjoy her experience so much that she decides to treat herself to a bit of pampering on a regular basis,” he says.

KISS AND MAKE-UP

The growing mineral make-up market allows consumers to make positive ethical purchases and still look good. Moira Paulusz and Annette Hanford report

After a slow start, demand for organic/ mineral make-up is growing as consumers realise that being eco-aware equates with the need to make a positive statement through their product choices.

With retail sales so important to a salon’s bottom line, finding premium beauty brands on sale in the local Boots store is not, on first impressions, a good thing. STRESS DOWN DAY -- IN YOUR SLIPPERS

JOIN WITH SAMARITANS FOR STRESS DOWN DAY

We're all involved in the "anti-stress" industry. Whether it's a relaxing facial, a muscle-relieving massage or a spa break, relaxation is key and can help guard against or lower stress levels.

As part of the Samaritan's Stress Down Day next year, the group is encouraging everyone to wear their slippers to work.

samaritans.jpg

Samaritans is looking for companies keen to join them on a Cause Related Marketing (CRM) basis for Stress Down Day. If you feel your products or your organisation fits the theme of reducing stress, calm and relaxation, down-time, perhaps that summertime healthy mind and healthy body balance, then the charity would be happy to hear from you.

This will be a fun approach to reducing stress in day to day life with a special emphasis on work-related stress. Funds raised will help Samaritans in its ongoing 24:7 emotional health support work - much of it directed at supporting people whose anxieties and fears are triggered by stress in the first place.
